Wildlife is abundant in the Fort Vermilion area and greater Mackenzie County. Every spring and fall warnings of bear sightings near / within Fort Vermilion are circulated on Facebook. Wolves, moose, deer, lynx and owls have been spotted along Bicentennial Highway 88 and fishing on the mighty Peace is common practice for locals. The Mackenzie Frontier Tourist Association has created a marvelous booklet with details where to view wildlife and how to do it safely.
