Photo by Marilee Cranna Toews, Fort Vermilion In 1907, Frederick S. Lawrence established the Dominion Experimental Farm at Fort Vermilion. Robert Jones became its first Superintendent and researcher in 1908.
Photo by Marilee Cranna Toews, Fort Vermilion Peace Alfalfa and Noralta Flax were developed through research trials. Field variety testing for northern crops continues, and each summer a Field Day is held. In fall, the harvested plot samples are dried in sacks which are hung outdoors.
Photo by Marilee Cranna Toews, Fort Vermilion Photographs, textual records and a few artifacts from the Fort Vermilion Experimental Farm were transferred to the Fort Vermilion Heritage Centre when the administration office closed in 1994.
